How to Word a Thank You Note for a Scholarship

Though you have won the money, the scholarship process is far from over. Not only have you been given an award because of your academic and personal accomplishments, but you have been given an invitation to compose yourself respectfully as an adult. A thank-you letter for a scholarship should convey that you are both respectful and humble. A well-written thank you letter will confirm to the donor that the right recipient was selected.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the letter. This is in part a piece of business correspondence, so it is best that it is typed on quality paper. Make sure to date the letter with the current date.

    • 2

Write the donor's name in the address field of the letter, then write the name of the scholarship on the next line. Write the donor's address underneath. If you do not know the donor's address, then write either the address of the scholarship office or the college department for the address field.

    • 3

Begin the letter with "Dear" and then the donor's name. This helps to convey your gratitude and sincerity.

    • 4

Thank the person in the first paragraph. Write both the amount and the name of the scholarship, and how grateful you are to have been awarded. Use professional and respectful language, not personal.

    • 5

Write about yourself and why the scholarship is important to your studies. Write about your collegiate goals and how the scholarship is going to help you achieve those goals. Keep the paragraph to three or four sentences -- don't go into your entire life's story, but give them a bit of yourself.

    • 6

Thank the donor again in the third paragraph and reiterate how the gift has inspired you to work hard and justify the generosity of the donor. Demonstrate your appreciation and awareness of the value of the donation to your future.

    • 7

Sign the letter, and then type your name and address below. This is in part a business correspondence, and it is best to get in the habit of presenting your contact information professionally.
