Federal Firefighter Student Grants

Most fire fighters have a high school diploma. However, fire departments increasingly prefer candidates with some postsecondary education. Some universities offer courses leading to a two-year or four-year degree in fire engineering or fire science. Entry-level workers usually receive several weeks of training at the department training center or academy. This is often followed by a period of probation with a fire department. Some departments have accredited apprenticeship programs that can last up to four years. Most departments also require firefighters to be certified as emergency medical technicians.
