A PIN is used when applying for student loans in college. A parent needs to use a PIN to electronically sign the FAFSA when their child is financially dependent on them. The PIN is used at the end of filling out a FAFSA form, when all correct information is provided for both student and parents. It is a 4-digit password combined with your Social Security number, name, and date of birth. Both the parent and student will create a seperate PIN on the Federal Student Aid PIN website. The PIN can then either be automatically sent to your e-mail or mailed to you within 7-to-10 days. Only one parent needs to use their PIN to electronically sign a FAFSA.
If a parent does not use a PIN to electronically sign a FAFSA, the form must be printed, signed, and mailed to the U.S Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid. The office will then review the form and set you up with any financial assistance available to you.
Do not share your PIN with anyone. Your PIN allows you to access all personal records online and is your electronic signature.
