Praxis II Tests & Information About the Different Tests

To become a teacher in many states across the United States, candidates must pass the Praxis II test, a written examination that measures general or subject-specific skills, depending on the certification you seek. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) is the only organization that administers the test. From the ETS Web site, ETS.org, you can access a study guide and a practice test in eBook form. You can also purchase Praxis II preparation books through bookstores online and brick and mortar.
  1. Which Test Do I Need?

    • ETS offers the Praxis II examination in more than 120 subject areas. Which test you take depends on which subject area you plan to teach: you can take a generalist test for grades K through 6, for example, or an English Content Area test if you're planning to teach middle or high school English. ETS recommends that before you sign up for a test, you check with your state or licensing agency to determine their requirements. They should be able to tell you exactly which test you need to take to qualify for licensure. There is also a link to state licensing requirements from the ETS website.

    How Do I Register?

    • You can take a computer- or paper-based test. The tests are one, two or four hours long, and you're allowed to take up to three in one day depending on the length of the test. You need a debit or credit card to register. Computer-based tests are given year-round by appointment. Call Prometric Candidate Services at 800-853-6773 (TTY users call 800-529-3590) to register. For the paper-based test, you can register online. You can take the paper-based test at ETS testing centers on scheduled dates. There are special registration procedures for test takers with disabilities and for those whose primary language is not English--you may also be eligible for extended testing time. The ETS website lists all test centers and dates by state.

How Do I Know If I Passed?

    • When you register for the test, you set up a My Praxis Account, through which you will be able to access your scores online. It takes a few weeks for your test to be scored. You can also get your scores by phone by calling 877-ETS-TEACH (877-387-8322) between 8 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, seven days a week. There is a $30 fee for scores by phone. Your score report includes your score and whether you passed; the range of possible scores; the raw points available in each content category; the range of the middle 50 percent of scores on that test; and your Recognition of Excellence (ROE) Award status, if applicable. If you have taken the Praxis test in the last 10 years, your score report also lists the highest score you earned on each test.

What Do I Do With My Scores?

    • When you schedule your test, you will have the opportunity to select the agencies to which ETS should report your scores. You can also print out your score report and put it in your portfolio to show to potential employers at job interviews, so they don't have to go to the licensing agency for that information.

    What If I Have Questions?

    • Visit the Resources for Test Takers section or the Frequently Asked Questions page at ETS.org. If you don't find what you need there, call the ETS office nearest you; the local phone numbers are also on the Web site. ETS Corporate Headquarters is located on Rosedale Road in Princeton, New Jersey 08541. Call 609-921-9000 if you need more help than you can find on the website.
