FCAT Math Tips

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is a statewide tool for measuring student performance in Florida. The test is given to students in grades three through 10. The passing score for grade 10 FCAT mathematics is 1889: all other grades are reported as "Achievement Levels" 1 to 5. An achievement level of 3 is considered satisfactory for advancing to the next grade.
  1. FCAT Explorer

    • Practice for fifth-, eighth-, and 12th-grade math FCAT using FCAT explorer, a free online tool provided by the Florida Department of Education. You can find over 150 practice problems for the fifth-grade math test in Math Station. Math Navigator provides eighth-grade students with 139 practice problems, and 10th-graders can find more than140 practice problems for math benchmarks in Math Timeline. Every student is assigned an FCAT Explorer account. You will receive a user name and password in the fourth grade. If you have lost the sheet of paper with that information on it, ask your teacher or school administrator for a replacement.

    FCAT Released Tests

    • Download the released tests for your grade from the Florida Department of Education's Released Tests website. The released math tests can help you to understand the problem types presented on the math portion of the FCAT, including math grid problems where you have to fill in a bubble chart instead of selecting from multiple choice.

    Formulas

    • Use the formulas provided for you on the test day. You don't have to memorize any formulas: concentrate on knowing how to use formulas rather than committing them to memory.

    Draw Pictures

    • Draw pictures of the math problem on your test booklet to help you visualize the problem. If the question asks you for a fraction of a pizza, draw the pizza. If a question is about heights of buildings, draw the buildings. Students who draw in their booklets tend to score higher on the FCAT math than those who do not.
