FCAT Testing Tips

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is given to students in grades 3 through 11 in math, reading, writing and science. The reading and math assessments are administered in grades 3 through 10; writing in grades 4, 8 and 10; and science in grades 5, 8 and 11. Starting in the 2010-11 school year, the assessments will become more aligned with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. These assessments help determine whether a student has the basic skills appropriate for the grade level. If a student does not, the school district provides specialized instruction to help the student in the area of concern. The scores a student achieves also determines whether or not promotion or graduation will be awarded or denied. Acceptable scores vary for the various tests and levels.
  1. Basic Preparation

    • Students should be familiar with the basic test-taking techniques of the FCAT, including the rules and regulations governing administration of the test. If a student fails to adhere to the requirements during test-taking, the test may be scored invalid. During testing, no talking or use of any electronic devices are permitted; only approved calculators may be used for the appropriate tests; and all time constraints must be followed unless a student has received permission for extended test-taking. To receive full credit for correct answers, students must know how to correctly fill in bubbles, complete grids, write within the allotted frames provided and completely erase all changed answers.

    Practice

    • Students need to become familiar with the form and length of the test. The Florida Department of Education releases tests and questions in reading, math and science. The most current released exams, as of September 2010, are the 2007 assessments, which are provided on the FLDOE website.

    FCAT Explorer

    • FCAT Explorer provides teachers with the capability of having students practice skills needed for academic success. Students who use this program, provided by the state, must do so on the computer. It is up to students to monitor their progress and to carefully answer questions. This teaching tool provides feedback to individuals to encourage them to master academic skills.

    Taking the Test

    • Make sure you get a good night's sleep the day before the test, have a nutritious breakfast and arrive on time with the correct writing implements. Concentrate on the test and carefully read all prompts and instructions before you begin to answer the questions.
