Tips on Giving the TOEIC Reading Test

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is used primarily by businesses to evaluate potential employees. It assesses the skills of non-native English speakers working in a global environment. TOEIC questions are geared toward situations encountered in a business atmosphere. Reading and listening segments of the exam are paired. The reading portion evaluates understanding of written English. TOEIC is given in schools and various training programs throughout the world, and test moderators must follow specific guidelines.
  1. Direction Book

    • Understand the rules and regulations of the TOEIC reading test. Corporations have the option of allowing staff members--trained by TOEIC personnel--to administer the exam. An examiner's manual is available at the Educational Testing Service's website. The reading test is in a multiple-choice format.

    Writing Utensils

    • Be sure that only No. 2 pencils are used to mark answers, as they are most compatible with the answer sheet scanners. Pens or markers might leak out to other areas of the answer sheet causing errors. Due to past security incidences, pens and mechanical pencils are not permitted in the testing room.

    Identification Check

    • Verify each test-taker's identification: a document with a signature and a photograph. The photograph must be recent and recognizable. The document cannot be expired and must be an original. Acceptable forms of identification include a state, national, or military ID, a driver's license or passport. If the primary ID does not contain the signature or photograph, an additional secondary ID must be presented. Depending on the testing center, electronic identification forms may also be used.

    Personal Items

    • Instruct participants as to where they must deposit personal belongings. Items such as handbags, cell phones, pagers and study materials are not permitted in the testing area. Participants may have nothing with them other than identification.

    Visitors

    • Do not allow friends or family members of test-takers to enter the testing vicinity. Only those registered to take the test may enter the area. Additionally, no participant can be admitted once the testing materials have been distributed.

    Time Frame

    • Adhere to time frames. The reading portion of the TOEIC is compromised of three sections. The total time allotted is 75 minutes. Students should move from one section to the next. Advise them to answer questions for which they feel confident first. They should then go back and attempt to answer all other questions. An unanswered question counts as a wrong response.

    Dismissal

    • Release any participant who breaks the testing rules. These include, but are not limited to, causing a disturbance, cheating, leaving the vicinity without permission or possessing items other than a form of identification.

    Material Collection

    • When the testing time is over, collect all testing materials. Be sure to get a booklet and an answer sheet from each participant. Take precautions to ensure that no one leaves with any of the testing materials in their possession.
