EOG Comprehension Test Tips

Reading comprehension is an important skill students will need for the EOG (End-of-Grade) test, as well as for standardized tests they will take in the future such as the SAT and the rest of their academic careers. The reading comprehension section on the EOG typically involves reading a selection of text and answering questions based on the excerpt. Prepare for the EOG and improve your score using some simple techniques.
  1. Read the Whole Passage

    • Some reading comprehension test strategies advise students that they do not need to read the entire passage to be able to answer the questions. While it may be possible to first read the questions and later go to the passage and try to answer each question, this is not the best strategy for the EOG, as it tends to ask questions about the main idea of an excerpt. Read the whole passage through at least once to get an understanding of the main idea, themes and arguments within.

Look at the Main Ideas and Structure

    • Ascertain the main idea of each paragraph. The best way to do this is by looking at the first sentence; this should tell you the topic or argument of the paragraph, and the rest should contain supporting details. By looking at the topic sentences, figure out how the whole passage is structured so you know what to look for in analyzing it. Is it in chronological order? Does each paragraph contain a point that supports an overarching thesis? Determining the structure will help you understand the passage's main ideas.

    Visualize the Story

    • Reading fiction, if you have trouble with reading comprehension, it helps to constantly visualize the story you're reading. This includes the characters and the actions they're taking' it also includes sounds and smells. Visualization will help you understand the text by imagining the action.

    Discerning Difficult Vocabulary

    • Some questions will ask you the meaning of a word used in a passage to test your vocabulary and your ability to understand words you don't know based on their context. Remember that some words have more than one meaning; it is imperative to look at the context in which the word is being used. Take advantage of the multiple choice system to test out each answer choice in the sentence in which the word appears, then pick the answer that makes the most sense in the context.
