CSET Math Test Preparation Tips

Before you are certified to teach math in the California public school system you must first pass the California Subject Examinations for Teachers, or CSET, in mathematics. Preparing for this test requires a refresher of several subject areas in math in which you need to be comfortable solving equations and explaining how you reached your conclusion.
  1. Subjects

    • Know the subjects that are going to be covered on the CSET math test. According to the CSET home page, the requirements for mathematics include algebra, geometry, number theory, probability and statistics, calculus and the history of math. These subjects are further broken down into areas such as trigonometry in calculus and functions in algebra.

    Practice

    • Don't just read up on the subjects being covered in the CSET math test. Use practice tests offered online to target trouble spots in your knowledge. For example, if you've taken a practice test and performed poorly on the geometry section, refresh yourself on the subject with worksheets or sample questions found in geometry textbooks. The practice tests will also prepare you for the CSET format itself.

    Study Groups

    • Prepare with a partner or group who are also taking the test. By working together, you can explain concepts to one another that someone might not be clear on. Additionally, if during practice tests, one of you chooses the incorrect answer, the others can help explain why and how they came to the correct solution. Working as a group also acts as preparation for teaching students as you educate each other on different subjects.

    Pace Yourself

    • Spread out your studying over several days or weeks. Rather than cramming every subject into a short time period, focus on algebra for a few days then move on to geometry and the rest. Don't move on to the next subject until you are confident in your knowledge of the previous. By spreading out your preparation, you can increase the time you spend focusing on each subject and gain a higher level of understanding.

    Go Online

    • Print out a copy of the "Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools" from the California Department of Education website. This guide dictates the content that is on the CSET math test. Use it as a study guide, marking areas you are confident in and areas you need more work in. By the end of your test preparation, you should know every item listed in the standards guide.
