TAKS Test Taking Strategies for Math

TAKS refers to the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. It evaluates how much students at specific grade levels have learned and are able to apply specific pieces of knowledge and skills. In grades nine, ten and eleven, students must complete a TAKS multiple choice section in mathematics. Employing specific strategies can make this section less difficult.
  1. Brain Dump

    • Once the test proctor gives you your test booklet and the test has officially begun, open up your booklet to the inside over. The blank space on the inside cover of the test booklet is ideal for writing down important formulas, Venn diagrams and test taking reminders. Many of these things are essential for doing well on the test. Once you have them written down, you don't have to worry about forgetting them and can conduct the exam with renewed focus. Make sure you understand all units of measurement and how to convert them.

    Work Backwards

    • Most schools teach the traditional method of solving a problem, which means using the information provided to come up with the answer. However, you can use the answers provided in the multiple choice format and work backwards for tough questions. For example, plug in each of the answers into the math problem to see if it will work correctly. Only one of the numbers provided will; it's just a question of trying them all to see which one is correct. Because this method can sometimes be time-consuming, only use it when you're stumped.

    Draw

    • When it comes to mathematics, everyone learns differently and understands a concept in a different way. If a math word problem is describing a situation that you have to visualize such as a shape, structure or quantity, don't hesitate to draw a diagram. A diagram can ultimately give you a better understanding of the problem. Similarly, if the test gives you a diagram, don't be afraid to write on it with measurements or values to which the test question refers.
