Test Taking Strategies for the 5th Grade

Teachers give fifth graders tests on various subjects, including math, science and reading, to see if they're retaining the information they learn in class. If you become nervous before taking tests, you are not alone. Learn several test-taking strategies to help you do well on tests.
  1. Practice Relaxation

    • It's normal to feel a little nervous before a test, but it's important to not let your nerves keep you from doing well on the test. Before you take a test, take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that you'll do fine.

    Prepare For Tests

    • The best way to do well on tests is to be prepared for them. Listen to your teacher's lectures in class, and ask questions if you don't understand something. Start studying for a test at least a week ahead of time instead of the night before.

Don't Spend Too Much Time on Questions

    • Because you only have a certain amount of time to complete a test, it's important to not spend too much time on one question. If you are stuck on a question, work on another one. Once you're finished with all the other questions, try to work on the question you were stuck on.

    Read Directions

    • Pay attention to all the directions on the test. Skipping over a couple words can cause you to get some of the questions wrong. Also pay attention to what your teacher tells you before the test, so you don't miss any important instructions.

    Don't Skip Questions

    • If you come across a question you don't know, don't skip it. Even if you have to guess the answer, you still have a chance of getting it right, especially if it's multiple choice or a true-or-false question.

    Proofread Your Test

    • After you finish answering every question, look over your test to make sure you didn't accidently skip over any questions. If your test is Scantron, check to see if the bubbles you filled in are dark enough.
