How Can a High School Dropout Get His Diploma?

Leaving high school before graduation need not arrest your plans for higher education and career advancement: the General Educational Development is widely accepted throughout the United States and internationally as a valid equivalent of a high school diploma. The GED test is administered several times a year in every state -- including several federal penitentiaries -- and in several international locations, including U.S. military bases. Although the test is not offered online, a large variety of online preparation materials make it possible for students to prepare for the GED via distance education.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a GED Testing Center by visiting the American Council on Education website (see Resources) and entering your zip code. A list of locations will be generated; choose one and use the contact information to determine local resources such as GED preparation courses and testing dates.

    • 2

Prepare for the GED by taking advantage of the online materials offered by the American Council on Education (see References). These materials include sample test questions, interactive activities and videos and practice tests.

    • 3

Register for and take the GED test at a local testing center. You may request accommodations to have the test administered in Spanish, French, Braille or by audio, as well as special accommodations if you have a learning or physical disability.

Request to have transcripts of your GED scores sent to colleges or employers, as appropriate.
