Age Requirements to Take the GED Test in Tennessee

The General Educational Development (GED) test is administered by the American Council on Education, and is widely regarded as equivalent to a high school diploma. It may not be taken online, but the state of Tennessee offers testing centers in more than 30 locations throughout the state, including correctional institutions, and also offers free GED preparation classes. Test-takers must be 18 years of age, but some provisions are made for 17-year-olds with appropriate documentation.
  1. Minimum Age

    • Test-takers must be 18 years old to take the GED in Tennessee without special permission. They may not hold a high school diploma, nor a certificate that is considered equivalent to a high school diploma. Test-takers must present official government identification such as a driver's license or a passport that clearly demonstrates their name, address, date of birth and signature. The identification must be currently valid; expired documentation will not be accepted.

    Special Permission for Younger Test-Takers

    • Test-takers who are 17 may also take the GED with appropriate documentation. They must be currently enrolled in a Tennessee GED Option Program and not enrolled in a conventional high school, and they must demonstrate a passing grade in the GED pre-test administered. The school superintendent completes an age waiver form, which will allow the student to take the test.

    Preparation for Test-Takers

    • The state of Tennessee offers free classes throughout the state to help students prepare for the test. Information on local GED preparation classes may be obtained from the Office of Adult Education, Department of Labor and Workforce Development, at 615-741-7054.

    Special Accommodations

    • The GED may be administered in several languages, including Braille and audio cassette versions. With appropriate documentation, students may be eligible for special accommodations for physical or learning disabilities.
