Test-takers must be 18 years old to take the GED in Tennessee without special permission. They may not hold a high school diploma, nor a certificate that is considered equivalent to a high school diploma. Test-takers must present official government identification such as a driver's license or a passport that clearly demonstrates their name, address, date of birth and signature. The identification must be currently valid; expired documentation will not be accepted.
Test-takers who are 17 may also take the GED with appropriate documentation. They must be currently enrolled in a Tennessee GED Option Program and not enrolled in a conventional high school, and they must demonstrate a passing grade in the GED pre-test administered. The school superintendent completes an age waiver form, which will allow the student to take the test.
The state of Tennessee offers free classes throughout the state to help students prepare for the test. Information on local GED preparation classes may be obtained from the Office of Adult Education, Department of Labor and Workforce Development, at 615-741-7054.
The GED may be administered in several languages, including Braille and audio cassette versions. With appropriate documentation, students may be eligible for special accommodations for physical or learning disabilities.
