How to Interpret STS High School Placement Test Results

High School Placement Tests (HSPT) help high school teachers and administrators with "student admissions, scholarship selection, and curriculum placement," according to the Scholastic Testing Service (STS) website. Eighth-grade students take the test for placement in ninth-grade scholastic programs. Students receive a score report that shows their test results after they take the test.

Skim the graph of test results. A student and his parents can skim over the results when they receive them. The test results include a graphical representation of a student's cognitive and basic skills performances on the test. The graph shows the percentile the student ranked, which indicates the percentage of students from the United States who scored below what the student has for each section of the test.

    • 2

Read the items that the test measures. These are given as acronyms on the x axis of the graph, each one defined in a list that begins under the graph.

    • 3

Study the cognitive skills test scores. Begin with first item graphed, which is "VB," or verbal skills. Note the percentile on the graph, then read the description explaining what the test measures.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 for the next two items on the x axis of the graph (QT, TCS). They are quantitative skills and total cognitive skills.

    • 5

Study the basic skills test scores. They are next three items on the x axis on the graph (RD, MT, LN and TBS). They are results of the reading, math, language and total basic skills of those tests. Note the percentile on the graph, then read the description explaining what each test measures.

    • 6

Study the result of OP and CMP test scores on the graph. The OP score is how the student performed in one of the following three subjects: science, mechanical aptitude or religion. The CMP score is the total of the verbal, quantitative, reading, language and mathematics.

Read the results of the CSQ (learning potential) and GE (grade equivalents) at the bottom of the report. These items are not included on the graph. They are separate calculations about the student's performance.
