How to Dispute a Grade on a Certified Public Accountant Exam

Before anyone is licensed by their state as a Certified Public Accountant, or a CPA, you must first pass the CPA exam in the state where you want to obtain your CPA certificate. The exam tests your knowledge of accounting and its appropriate practices, and failing means you will not receive your state certification. However, should you fail the exam, you are permitted to retake the test. If you feel your exam score is inaccurate you can dispute it and have your test rescored. The CPA exam is scored twice before your final grade is released and according to the American Institute of CPAs, the chances of your score being proved inaccurate is less than 1 percent.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the State Board of Accountancy in the state where you took the CPA exam for score disputing details. Not all states allow testers to dispute exam scores so you need to verify with the state that you can dispute yours.

    • 2

Submit a formal request that the state review your scores to the board of accountancy. It is imperative that you find out the deadline for appealing your test scores because once the deadline expires, your score becomes ineligible for appeal.

    • 3

Pay the fee required to dispute your scores and wait for the board of accountancy to contact you regarding the date and time of your appeal review, for which you must be in attendance. The fee varies by state and by the number of questions on the exam you wish to review. You will be contacted regarding the outcome of your appeal once the state has reviewed the evidence and made its decision.
