Physical science experiment 1.2 and 1.3 description?

Experiment 1.2: Measuring the Density of a Liquid

Objective: To measure the density of a liquid using a graduated cylinder and a balance.

Materials:

* Graduated cylinder

* Balance

* Liquid sample

* Beaker

* Water

Procedure:

1. Fill the graduated cylinder to the 10 mL mark with the liquid sample.

2. Place the graduated cylinder on the balance and zero out the scale.

3. Slowly add water to the graduated cylinder until the liquid level reaches the 20 mL mark.

4. Record the mass of the liquid sample and water in grams.

5. Calculate the density of the liquid sample using the formula:

```
Density = mass / volume
```

Experiment 1.3: Determining the Melting Point of a Solid

Objective: To determine the melting point of a solid using a melting point apparatus.

Materials:

* Melting point apparatus

* Solid sample

* Thermometer

* Heat source

Procedure:

1. Place the solid sample in the melting point capillary tube and secure it in place.

2. Attach the capillary tube to the melting point apparatus.

3. Turn on the heat source and gradually heat the sample.

4. Observe the sample and record the temperature at which it begins to melt.

5. Repeat the experiment with different solid samples to determine their melting points.
