Of all courses that lead to increased ACT performance, mathematics has been shown to be the most advantageous. Most college prep curricula recommend three essential units of mathematics, namely algebra I, algebra II and geometry. Additional recommended math courses include trigonometry, pre-calculus and calculus. Depending upon the field of study one wishes to pursue, computer science courses may also be of value.
Increasingly, the understanding of English is becoming essential to advantages in the real world. In terms of ACT performance, composition is of particular importance as there is an essay section on the test. Therefore, four units of English are recommended, with particular emphasis on composition courses such as creative writing or journalism. In addition, the study of a foreign language often reinforces the understanding of English grammar, leading to improved composition ability. As such, three units of a foreign language are also recommended.
Four units of natural sciences are recommend for both ACT prep and college prep. For a solid foundation, four particular classes are recommended: earth science, biology, chemistry and physics.
