How to Improve on the Reading Part of the Basic Skills Test

Basic skills tests are used to determine skill level in school age children and determine placement and qualifications for college and graduate level students. Basic skills tests contain questions in mathematics, writing and grammar, and reading comprehension, as well as content specific material. The reading comprehension portion of these tests requires that you read a passage and answer questions about the reading. It measures your level of understanding of the passage.

Instructions

    • 1

Look online to see what resources are available as a study guide for the specific test you are taking. Most standardized tests like the ACT, Praxis and GRE offer study guides for purchase from their websites.

    • 2

Research what tutoring services are available in your community. There are tutoring businesses that specifically hire tutors to teach basic skills test material. The phone book and Internet are good resources to locate these types of businesses.

    • 3

Visit websites like testprepreview.com and cengage.com which offer free practice tests.

    • 4

Gather a group of friends together to form a study group for reading skills. Practice by having everyone bring a reading passage and ten questions about it to do as a group.

    • 5

Take the actual test you are needing as a practice. Many of the basic skills tests allow you to take them at least a couple times in a six month to a year time frame. Use the first time as a practice to get an idea of what reading comprehension questions look like.
