ACT Preparation Checklist

The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized test in the U.S. that tests high school students' academic ability for college admission. The test has a four-section format which includes English, math, reading and science. It also has an optional writing portion. During each section, the student is given an allotted amount of time and a certain number of questions. Many students find that creating a checklist of important items to remember a major help in preparation.
  1. Physical Items

    • On the day of your test, you should bring your admission ticket, which includes some personal information that will appear on your answer sheet. You should also bring identification such as a driver's license or passport. Be sure to bring a couple of sharpened number 2 lead pencils to fill in your answers. You will also need an acceptable calculator for the mathematics portion of the exam. It may be a good idea to bring a watch as well. A watch will help you stay on pace.

    Mental Checklist

    • Make sure that you stay on pace with each portion of the exam. The English portion of the ACT has 75 questions and you will be given 45 minutes to complete the questions. You will have a minute to complete just under two questions. The mathematics portion has 60 questions to be completed in one hour, which gives you about a minute per question. The reading and science portions have 40 questions to be completed in 35 minutes, which gives you just under a minute to complete each question.

    More Mental Checklist Items

    • Dress comfortably for your exam. Depending on the season, you may want to wear a short-sleeve shirt with jeans and a sweater. The temperature in the testing room can vary. Try to get adequate sleep the night before and eat a quality breakfast. Be sure to trust your first instinct with the test questions. Second guessing yourself can lead to confusion and uncertainty. Never spend too long on any one question of the exam. Stay on your pace to avoid having unanswered questions.

    What Not to Bring

    • The ACT does not allow food or drink in the test room. You also cannot have dictionaries, notebooks or any other books or sources of help. Do not bring highlighters, pens or other writing utensils aside from your number 2 pencils. Electronic devices such as cell phones and music players are also unauthorized. You will not be able to take those devices with you in the test center.
