Topic: The Elements of Poetry
Objectives:
* Students will be able to define and identify the following elements of poetry:
* Simile
* Metaphor
* Personification
* Alliteration
* Onomatopoeia
* Students will be able to analyze how the use of these elements contributes to the meaning and impact of a poem.
Materials:
* Copies of poems that contain examples of the elements of poetry
* Whiteboard or projector
* Markers or pens
* Paper
Procedure:
1. Begin by reviewing the objectives of the lesson with students.
2. Next, lead a discussion on the different elements of poetry.
* For each element, provide a definition and an example.
* Ask students to identify examples of the elements in the poems that they have read.
3. Once students have a good understanding of the different elements of poetry, have them work in pairs or small groups to analyze a poem.
* Ask them to identify the different elements of poetry that are used in the poem and to explain how these elements contribute to the meaning and impact of the poem.
4. Finally, have students share their analysis with the class.
Assessment:
* Students will be assessed on their ability to:
* Define and identify the different elements of poetry.
* Analyze how the use of these elements contributes to the meaning and impact of a poem.
Differentiation:
* For struggling students, provide them with more scaffolding during the discussion of the different elements of poetry.
* For example, you could give them a list of the elements and ask them to find examples of each in the poems that they have read.
* For advanced students, challenge them to analyze a more complex poem.
* You could also ask them to write their own poem that uses at least three of the elements of poetry.
Extension:
* Have students research different poets and their use of the elements of poetry.
* Have students create a poster or presentation that illustrates the different elements of poetry.
