How to Get the Average Speed of Different Speeds

You may want to find the average speed of a moving object for a variety of reasons. For example, if you want to calculate your average gas mileage, you must first calculate the average speed of your car. Whatever the reason and no matter what you are calculating, the method for finding the average or mean of a set of numbers is the same. Before you find the average, ensure that each number is expressed in the same unit of measure.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert each speed to the same measurement, if they are not already. You can't get an average, for example, if some of your speeds are in kilometers per hour (KPH) and others are in miles per hour (MPH). If your measurements are 75 KPH, 85 MPH and 95 MPH, you must convert 75 KPH to MPH. To do so, divide the speed by the amount of kilometers in a mile, which is 1.609344. So, 75 KPH / 1.609344 = 46.6 MPH. To convert other measurements of speed, see Resources.

    • 2

      Add the speeds together. For example, 46.6 MPH + 85 MPH + 95 MPH = 226.6 MPH

    • 3

Count the number of different speeds. For this example, there are three separate speeds.

    • 4

Divide the total speed by the number of different speeds. For example, 226.6 / 3 = 75.53. The average speed for this example is 75.53 MPH.
