End of Year Teacher Gifts for Teachers Who Are Leaving

Teachers often receive gifts at the end of a school year, but when a teacher is retiring or otherwise leaving her job, it can be sad for both the children and parents and a special gift can be appropriate. Many teachers do not expect an extravagant or expensive gift, and may feel uncomfortable accepting one. Instead, opt for a thoughtful and kind gesture that shows just how much her efforts were appreciated.
  1. Potted Plant

    • Present the teacher with a potted plant along with a note that says, "Thank you for helping me grow." Choose an indoor plant that she can place on her new desk or at home as a reminder of her past students. For an added personal touch, stick a class photograph onto a wooden stick and place it into the soil of the plant. Tie a chunky ribbon around the plant pot to finish for a thoughtful and sentimental gift.

    Appreciation Book

    • Nothing delights a teacher more than knowing his efforts have really made a difference to his students. Ask each child in the class to write a message stating what makes his teacher so great. This could include things such as his caring nature or how he has stopped bullying in the school. Bind all the notes together to form a teacher appreciation book. Include a poem or handwritten letter at the front of the book thanking him for his hard work and commitment towards the education of the children.

    Gift Basket

    • Teachers work long and busy hours, often grading papers well into the early evening. Put together a gift basket that will allow your teacher some time to relax and unwind. The contents do not need to be expensive, just well thought out. Search the local dollar store for candles, bath products and lotions. A gift basket can be themed to match the personality or hobbies of your teacher. If she prefers to relax by walking her dog or hitting the gym, tailor your contents accordingly, such as a sports drinks bottle or music gift certificate.

    Photographic Scrapbook

    • Throughout the school year, there are many photographic memories to collect, from the school play to the official class photograph. Put together a photographic scrapbook that includes special images throughout the teacher's life at the school. Ask other parents or the school principal for help collating photographs. Include additional mementos such as a leaflet from a school sports day, or local newspaper articles that have featured the positive work done by the school.
