The Elementary Spelling Bee Materials

Spelling bees, proclaiming the best speller in the school, are an honored tradition in elementary schools. Pulling all of the materials together to ensure a spelling bee goes smoothly takes some planning and organization. The spellers, judges and spelling caller need to have everything available to make an enjoyable and conclusive spelling bee.
  1. Spellers

    • The spellers should be provided with a practice booklet of spelling words. This is not the list of words that they will be asked to spell in the spelling bee. The list is most helpful if it is divided into sections according to the language of origin. The spellers learn to recognize patterns in each language and apply those rules to other words.

Spellers also need a podium and chairs during the spelling bee. Provide scratch paper, pencils and a trash can, if the students are allowed to write the words before spelling them. A microphone should be provided at the podium for the spellers to spell into.

    Judges

    • Provide the judges with the accepted spelling list for the spelling bee. They also need the approved dictionary to check words if there is a dispute. A copy of the spelling bee rules should be placed at their seat. The two to three judges sit at a separate table with comfortable chairs. They also need a note pad and pencils. A bell or other sound device to signal a misspelled word is an additional item to consider providing.

    Word Caller

    • This is one of the most important jobs in the spelling bee. They need to be a clear speaker to ensure the students understand the word to spell. The caller needs the spelling list, spelling bee rules and a microphone.

    Awards

    • Trophies or ribbons for the top three spellers in the school are presented at the conclusion of the spelling bee. Certificates of participation are given out to the other spellers in the event.
