For this activity, students must work together in teams to collectively spell a word. Divide students into groups of three to 10 and present them with a word to spell. Students then take turns calling out the letters of that word, starting with the first person saying the first letter, and so on. If the word has more letters than the number of people in the group, the first student takes another turn, and so on. If a team gets the word wrong, the other teams can jump in and finish the word. You can play for points, or set a time limit to make the game more exciting.
You can use students' enthusiasm for sports in this spelling bee activity. Draw a soccer or football field on your chalkboard, including 2 goals and field markers indicating a center line and grid numbers. Draw a soccer ball or football on the board, starting at the center line. Divide students into two groups, and alternate between calling out words for each group. Every correctly spelled word moves the ball closer to that team's "goal," and misspelled words can either move the ball closer to the other team's goal or not move the ball at all.
For this activity, you will need to cut out and laminate the 26 letters of the alphabet on 1-foot-by-1-foot squares. Arrange the letters in a keyboard pattern on your classroom floor. Call out spelling words, and have students take turns "typing" them by jumping from letter to letter. For fun, you can allow students to use a "backspace" key a certain number of times to correct their errors. Challenge students to type the spelling words as quickly as possible to add an extra element to this activity.
