How to Become a Daycare Worker

Daycare workers are responsible for taking care of infants to children just shy of beginning kindergarten. Each daycare facility operates a little differently. Some daycare's employ teachers to facilitate each class and then hire workers to aid the teacher. Other facilities have daycare workers lead the class without offering any official lessons that would require a teacher. If you love working with children, then you may want to consider becoming a daycare worker.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a babysitting course. Many hospitals offer this course. The course doesn't last long, and you will get a certificate to begin babysitting. This is a great way to prepare to be a daycare worker later on.

    • 2

Become CPR certified. You can do this through the babysitting course, or you can get your certification through your local hospital or ambulance corp. An employer of a daycare worker will be more likely to hire someone who has the ability to save a life over someone who doesn't.

    • 3

Begin babysitting or take some nanny positions. This will give you the experience you need to put on a resume. The families will also make excellent references if you do a good job.

    • 4

Volunteer to serve in your church nursery or at a day camp. Again, this will make a great reference on your resume.

    • 5

Create a resume and list all of the experience you have had with infants and children. Also, list any education background or certifications you have received.

    • 6

Drop off your resume at your local daycare offices. If they are not hiring, ask them to keep your resume on file for when a position opens. If they are hiring, ask for an application to include with the resume.

    • 7

Dress nice if you get called in for an interview. You want to appear presentable. You also want to show up to the interview on time. If you are late, this will lead the employer to believe that you will always be late to work.

    • 8

Make a connection with the children in the daycare if you get hired. Make them feel safe and that you care about them, so they are comfortable when their parents leave. This will demonstrate to your boss that he made a good decision in hiring you.
