Create 26 squares out of poster board, making each square at least 6 inches by 6 inches. Write one letter of the alphabet on each square with a dark marker. Scatter the letter squares on the floor in random positions. Choose only five to 10 letters to make the game easier for toddlers. Call out a letter that is on the floor, asking the toddler to identify the card with the letter and jump over it. Continue calling out letters, allowing your toddler to jump over each one.
Use note cards to create the game pieces for the letter hunt game. Choose a particular letter you wish to practice, and make 10 cards with that letter on them. Hide the letter cards around the house in spots a toddler easily can find. Add in cards with other letters to make the game more challenging. Have the toddler search around the house, finding and collecting the cards with the particular letter you are studying. Tell her not to collect the other letters. This helps her distinguish between the different letters.
Use a permanent, black marker to divide a beach ball into 26 different sections, one for each letter of the alphabet. Write one letter in each section of the beach ball. Throw the beach ball to your toddler, asking him to identify the letters that are under each of his thumbs when he catches the ball. Vary the activity by having him identify the letter under his left or right thumb, which also increases his understanding of left and right.
Provide your toddler with a set of magnetic letters and a metal baking sheet. Use the refrigerator if a pan is not available. Set a timer for 2 minutes. When the timer starts, have your toddler begin placing the letter magnets on the pan or refrigerator in alphabetical order. This advanced ABC game gives toddlers the opportunity to practice ordering the letters they recognize. Set the time for a longer or shorter period to adjust the difficulty of this activity.
