Preschool playground equipment requirements are set by federal and state guidelines. Each state varies so it is advisable to check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ensure playgrounds are constructed safely.
Playground equipment must be age appropriate. Equipment measuring 20 inches or higher off the ground must have protective barriers. There should be no open spaces measuring between 3 to 9 inches on the equipment.
Adult supervision must extend beyond merely watching children play. Adults must be prepared to respond to an emergency if needed.
Surround playground equipment with soft ground material in the event a fall occurs. Appropriate materials include wood chips, sand and rubber matting.
A strict equipment maintenance schedule is essential to safety. Routinely check for broken equipment and missing pieces, and remove any items that can cause injury or do not belong on the playground.
