Preschool Playground Safety Checklist

Physical activity is a very important tool in fighting childhood obesity. Although playing outside is a great way to enhance physical activity, improperly maintained playgrounds can pose dangers to small children. Preschool workers must continuously check outdoor play equipment for safety.
  1. Slides

    • Slides should have some type of cushioning at the bottom. Make sure the slide has sturdy rails at the top for children to hold on to when climbing and sliding. Preschool children should never climb above 5 feet in height. The space for the slide in front of the ladder and on each of the slide's sides should be at least 6 feet from the middle of the equipment. The area in front of the slide where children exit must be 4 feet more than the total height of the slide. No equipment or toys should be placed in these areas. These areas are considered part of the slide equipment usage space.

    Flooring

    • Make sure the playground has safe flooring under and around play equipment. The surface should aid in softening a fall as well as absorb shock when children run and jump. Some of the most common forms of playground flooring include mulch, rubber chips, wood chips and rubber matting. Never allow children to play on equipment that is placed on concrete, asphalt or other hard and nonabsorbing surfaces.

    Swing Safety

    • One of the most popular pieces of playground equipment is a swing. However, a swing can also be one of the most dangerous. Make sure the hooks on the swing are closed to prevent the chain from slipping off. Swing seats should be soft and flexible and chains should be covered by plastic. Other equipment and toys should not be placed in the front or back path of the swing.
