All Head Start teachers need to have first aid and pediatric CPR certification. Each classroom should also have a first aid kit in a clearly-labeled location. The kit should contain at minimum bandages, latex gloves, tweezers, antibiotic cream, surgical tape, sanitizer, an ice pack and a first aid booklet.
An emergency evacuation plan should be posted and visible near a classroom exit. Teachers should conduct and document fire drills and and other necessary safety drills, such as earthquake or tornado drills, once a month. All building exits should be clearly marked with approved EXIT signs.
Each classroom and the school kitchen must have a fire extinguisher that is easily accessible to staff members. The extinguishers should be inspected annually. All electrical outlets must have protective covers. Each classroom and office should have a flashlight on hand and batteries must be checked on a regular basis.
All cleaning agents, flammable liquids, toxic material and aerosols must be kept in original containers with labels intact. These items must be stored in areas away from children in labeled cabinets with child-proof locks. Potentially dangerous products must be stored separately from food and food service equipment.
