Preschool Art Activities for Veterans Day

Art is an important part of the preschool curriculum as children learn how to artistically express themselves, learn about colors, shapes and patterns and experiment with different art mediums. In addition to being educational, art projects can also be used to decorate your classroom or the preschoolers' homes. Get preschoolers in the patriotic spirit by helping them create art projects for Veterans Day.
  1. Patriotic Wind Sock

    • Honor veterans by placing this completed art project outside, letting it blow in the breeze. Provide children with white art paper and have them decorate it with red and blue paint, silver and gold glitter and star stickers. After the paper has dried, roll it into a tube so that one end meets the other. Staple the ends together. Have children attach pieces or red, white and blue crepe paper to the bottom of the tube using glue. Punch a hole on either side of the top of the tube and string a piece of yarn or a ribbon through the holes. Hang the wind sock by the yarn or ribbon.

    Patriotic Parade Stick

    • Parades are a common way to honor veterans on Veterans Day. Preschool children can show their respect for the veterans at a parade by waving these festive parade sticks. Using red, white and blue paint and star stickers, have children decorate empty paper towel tubes. Create streamers by cutting red, white and blue crepe paper into 5 inch strips. Help children glue or staple the streamers to the top of their paper towel tubes.

    Fingerprint Poppies

    • The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance for veterans all over the world. Using their fingers, children can create pictures of poppy fields to honor war heroes. Have children dip their thumbs into red finger paint and stamp four thumb prints in a square formation on a piece of white paper. Have children place their index fingers into green finger paint and stamp the green paint in the center of the poppy. Children can create as few or as many poppies as they'd like. They can further embellish their pictures by drawing American flags on them.

    Stick Stars

    • Children can make festive stars out of ice cream sticks and hang them around a house or a classroom in honor of Veterans Day. Help children create a five-pointed star by gluing five sticks in a star formation. Once the stars have been assembled, allow children to decorate them using red, white and blue paint or markers and silver and gold glitter. Tie a piece of string or yarn to the star, creating a loop, which can be used to hang the stars. For a bold display, have children create several stars and hang them from a ceiling or a wall next to one another.
