Sign your child up for language classes. You may find that there are special schools that focus on teaching languages to very young children. In some cases, you may be able to enroll a child as young as 6 months. Look for a school that hires native speakers of the language that you want your child to learn. The program should be short and--if your child is very young--you may be able to attend the class with him.
Watch videos in the foreign language. There are certain videos that are especially designed to teach children a foreign language through the use of animation. Some programs are mostly in English, with a few words in a language like Spanish or Chinese, while other programs are only in the foreign language. Videos can help children learn proper pronunciation.
Use picture books to improve vocabulary. Point to the items in the book and say the name of the item in the foreign language. Books that focus on a child's first words are great for these exercises. If you don't speak the language yourself, look for a book that includes the language you are teaching.
Play in a foreign language. When your child is playing, encourage him to do so in a different language. For example, you could point out the colors of objects or count things in a different language.
Meet with other families who share your goals. Learning conversational skills is a key to gaining fluency in a foreign language. Find other families that are trying to teach their children a foreign language and meet for play time. Encourage the children to speak only in the foreign language for more practice.
