Utilize a calendar activity to teach children how to observe the weather and record their findings. Make weather symbols. Include three suns-one with a few clouds, one with lots of clouds, and one covered with clouds; four thermometers depicting hot, warm, chilly and cold; and four pictures of children depicting no coat, a light jacket, a coat and hat, and bundled up. Teach a lesson about the symbols and what they mean. Every day, go outside and observe the weather. When back inside, ask the children to finds the symbols that represent their observations and put them on the calendar.
Go to the public library and check out as many books on fall and weather as you can. Kick off the Fall Weather Book Club on September 21 by reading a book. Introduce the activity to the children and tell them they have 30 days to earn stickers for reading books about fall weather and writing or drawing something in their club journals each day. Show the children a sample of a club journal and let them make their own. Leave the books in the reading area for the children to look at during reading and free time. Set a time each day to help them write in their journals.
The purpose of the fall weather bulletin board is to provide children information about what happens to the environment when summer changes to fall. Divide a bulletin board into three sections--summer, fall and winter. Put a tree trunk and branches in each section. Ask the children to talk about the trees, flowers and plants they saw during the summer. Have them make leaves and flowers to put in the summer section. Read books about why the leaves turn different colors in the fall. Have the children make fall colored leaves and put these in the fall section. Read about what the weather is like in the late fall and winter. Have the children complete the winter section with leaves on the ground around the tree and other observations they've made.
