During circle time, discuss why leaves change color during the fall. Show students pictures of fall leaves or take them outside to see the leaves firsthand. Give each student several leaves cut from green construction paper. Provide finger paints in fall colors, such as yellow, brown, red and orange. Encourage students to paint their green leaves bright fall colors.
Make mess-free jack-o'-lanterns with your students. Give each student a small pumpkin and markers or paints in a variety of colors. Help students draw triangles to make eyes, a nose and mouth or let students decorate the pumpkin as they choose. As an alternative, give students stickers to decorate the pumpkins.
Teach your students about bird migration by focusing on the Canada Goose, a North American bird that migrates in the fall. Talk to students about why the wild goose migrates when it is cold. Show students pictures and videos of geese flying in formation. Talk about the V shape geese make as they fly. Let students listen to the sound of these geese honking, and ask students if they can make the same sound.
Teach your students all about apples during the fall. If possible, visit an apple orchard and let students pick their own apples. Bring in apples of different colors and sizes for students to see and sort. Talk with your students about the different ways to consume apples, including raw, baked, in pies or as juice or cider. Let students taste different apple foods or invite parents to bring in their family's favorite apple recipes to share with the class.
