Fall Water Table Preschool Activities

Fall water table activities are fun for young children and create an enjoyable opportunity for tactile exploration. Water tables are an interactive tool used within preschool and elementary classroom that allow children to touch and feel different materials and experiment with how they move in water. Using a fall theme with a water table makes learning fun and exciting.
  1. Fall Leaves in the Water

    • Collect fall leaves from around the house or school and place them in the water table. Experiment with how the leaves feel in the water and what happens to them when they get wet. Do the leaves break apart as easily when wet as they do dry? Press the fall leaves in the water and see if they sink or float.

    Fall Color Water

    • Allow children to add drops of yellow and red of food coloring to the water table and experiment mixing the colors together. What color is created from combining red and yellow? Fall has many colors with orange being one of the boldest. Continue adding different drops of food coloring to create more fall color combinations. Try to create the same color in the water table as found on fall leaves.

    Fall Leaf Table

    • Create a fall water table experience by filling the water table with leaves instead of water. Allow children to crunch and squish leaves in the water table and feel the texture of the leaves. Place containers in the water table for children to press leaves into and fill.

    Fall Leaf Search

    • Fill the water table with sand and hide several fall leaves within the sand. Have children dig through the sand searching for the fall leaves. When a child finds one of the hidden leaves, have them take it out of the sand-filled water table. See which child can find the most fall leaves.

    Weighing the Leaves

    • Empty the water table and have children gather as many fall leaves as they can. Fill the table with the fall leaves. Try to guess how much the water table filled with fall leaves weighs. Does it weigh more or less than the water table when it is filled with water? Have the kids make a guess and then determine the weight of the leave filled water table.
