How to Use Montessori Teaching Parts of Speech With Stickers

The teaching methods of Maria Montessori have helped innumerable children. The Montessori method associates different shapes with each of the parts of speech. Nouns are represented by black pyramids or triangles, while verbs are represented by red balls or circles. Words associated with nouns are also triangular. An adjective is a blue triangle and an article is a smaller, light-blue triangle. Words associated with verbs are circular and adverbs are shown as small, orange circles.

Instructions

    • 1
      Red balls represent verbs.

Explain the difference between a noun and a verb. Associate the noun as a stable thing and show the black triangle or pyramid. Ask the children to think of nouns and praise them as they begin to understand the concept. Place a black triangle sticker on each noun they identify them in the room.

    • 2

Explain that a verb is an active or "doing" word. Roll the red ball or circle to emphasize the action of the verb. Ask the children to think of verbs and reward with praise as they gain correct answers. Write each verb on a red circular sticker and place it into the red circular box. Act out each verb as they do so.

    • 3

Continue until the child or children naturally associate a noun and a verb with the thing or action that it is.

    • 4

Introduce adjectives and adverbs. Adjectives describe nouns. Write adjectives on blue triangular stickers and stick them on the appropriate noun. Introduce funny and silly adjectives to help the lesson flow. Adverbs describe an action. Act out the adverbs and write the word on a small orange sticker. Place the sticker in the verb box. As learning becomes more complex, introduce additional colors and boxes.

    • 5

Take the verb and adverb stickers and make sentences about each of the nouns in the room. If each already has an adjective, this can become an amusing game for young children and will help them remember. Recap by calling out which sticker goes into which box as the lesson ends.
