Preschool Level: How to Make Homemade Potpourri

Children enjoy color and smells as they continue to explore the world. Making potpourri combines sight and smell with touching, exciting three of the five senses. Easy craft projects, like crafting potpourri, allow kids to experience a sense of accomplishment and get a reward for their efforts: the potpourri itself. Offer the children choices of flowers, scents and colors to use and allow them to express themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang fresh-cut roses, lilies, chamomile, or daisies upside down from their stems by tying a string around small bunches.

    • 2

Hang the string from the ceiling or a plant hook. Hang each type of plant separately. Let the flowers dry for two weeks, checking every day to see if they are drying nicely and not molding.

    • 3

Hang herbs to dry at the same time and in the same way.

    • 4

Pull off the dried petals and leaves. Put each type of plant in a separate bowl.

    • 5

Choose which color of tulle netting and silk ribbon to use. Spread the tulle netting out on the desk.

    • 6

Pick a handful of the dried leaves and flowers that smell good together and combine them in a pile on the tulle netting.

    • 7

Gather the tulle netting up around the potpourri. Have your helper tie the silk ribbon around the top of the netting to hold the potpourri in the sack.
