Back-to-School Activities for Two-Year-Olds

Back-to-school time can be a rough experience for 2-year-olds. You can help make the transition more enjoyable by providing the children with a clear outline of class structure and a non-threatening learning environment. Allow the children to work with their hands as much as possible, because it is often difficult for 2-year-olds to sit still. If you give the children enjoyable and welcoming activities in the first few days of school, they should have fewer insecurity and anxiety problems throughout the year.
  1. Poems and Songs

    • Teach the children poems and songs to encourage them to enjoy class and stop any fussing or crying about missing home. Sing songs about class rules, such as when to talk, when to sit still and how to listen. Make up a poem about the class rules and help the children say the poem. Go over the class rules after reciting the poem so that children get used to their new environment. Teach the children the "Clean Up" song to help make cleaning time fun.

    Kissing Hand

    • Use this craft to soothe homesick children. Place a heart sticker on each child's hand. Tell them the sticker represents a kiss from their parents. Have the children place their hands on their cheeks if they feel lonely, to feel their parents' kisses. You can also ask parents to make a cutout of their hands to give to their children for class. The children can then hold their parents' hands during class time if they feel homesick.

    Twinkie Buses

    • Provide a Twinkie for each child. Cut a notch out of one end of the Twinkie beforehand to make look like a bus's hood and windshield. Cover the top of the Twinkies with yellow icing. Give the children round gummy candies and strings of black licorice. Allow the children to add detailing with the licorice and wheels with the round candies. After the projects are done, allow the children to eat their creations.

    Paper Apples

    • Instruct the children to tear apart orange, red, yellow and green pieces of paper into small pieces. Give each child a paper with the outline of an apple on it. Place glue on the apple shape for each child. Instruct the children to place the cutout pieces inside the apple shape to make an apple collage. The children can use green for a leaf or stem and the red, orange and yellow to make a realistic-looking apple.
