Multicultural Musical Activities for Preschoolers

Multicultural musical activities help children become more aware of other cultures which populate the Earth. In addition, these activities aid children in learning more about music, tempo and different kinds of musical instruments. Use multicultural music activities to enrich your preschool classroom and encourage the children to explore other cultures on their own.
  1. Instruments

    • Teach children about the different instruments used around the world. Bring in a CD or a sound file of music from another culture and ask the children to try and identify the different types of instruments. Bring in pictures, or the instrument itself, of those instruments the children may not be familiar with. Explain how the instrument is played and its significance within the culture. If you have it on hand, let the children give it a go.

    Dancing

    • Dancing can be a very important aspect of cultural music. Download and bring in videos of different cultures and their dancing. If one of your students has an older sibling who participates in a cultural dance, such as Irish dancing or Flamenco dancing, ask the child's sibling to perform for the class. Learn a simple dance from another culture and teach it to your children and have them perform the dance for their parents during a presentation or class meeting.

    Songs

    • Songs represent many different things in a variety of cultures. Some songs are sung simply for fun while others stand for praising the god in the religion of the culture or asking for something (such as rain or blessings). Teach children a few simple songs and explain their meaning and origin. Ask the children to ask their parents for a song from their culture and have each child bring in a CD with a song representing it. Ask the child what the song means and have him explain it to the class.

    Costumes

    • Musicians and dancers often wear special costumes when dancing to cultural music. These costumes may represent something, such as farming or the country's royalty. Bring in a few pictures and examples of clothing worn by performers when they sing or dance traditionally. Ask children to pick their favorites and draw pictures of them, which can then be hung around the room.
