How to Create Children's Learning Center Memories

Preschool is not only about fun and games. If you observe a busy preschool classroom at center time, you will see children moving through learning centers, interacting with each other and exploring their world. Photos documenting these learning center activities and the art and writing samples made there not only make cheerful decorations, according to Gigi Schroeder in "Teaching Artist Journal," but helps preschoolers take their work seriously and shows them that their work is considered important. Documenting children's work this way is a frequent practice in the preschool teaching method known as the Reggio Emilia Approach. Displaying the work of your preschoolers can be done easily and should be incorporated into any preschool experience.

Instructions

  1. Creating Display Memories

    • 1

Designate a bulletin board or wall space to hang samples of preschoolers' learning center art and writing work. Label each item with the name of the child and the center where the work was done. Tape the papers to the board or wall.

    • 2

On a sheet of writing paper, compose a paragraph or two about the activities children did in centers to produce the work. Hang the description with the children's papers.

    • 3

Show the children the display. Read your synopsis to them. Refer to the display and discuss the children's memories of the experiences that led to the work.

    Creating Photo Memories

    • 4

With a digital camera, snap photos of preschoolers participating in center time activities. Print the photos. Glue each photo to the top half of a sheet of 9 by 12-inch construction paper, leaving room to write a caption underneath.

    • 5

Write a descriptive caption beneath each photo. Include details in the captions -- children's first names, the center where the photo was taken and the purpose of the pictured activity.

    • 6

Hang the captioned photos on a wall near the center where each picture was taken. As new captioned photos are ready to hang, remove the previously displayed pictures.

    • 7

Use a three-hole punch to punch holes in the left side of captioned pictures when they are removed from the wall. Place them in a three-ring binder. Store binders of captioned pictures on a shelf in the center where the photos were taken. Encourage preschoolers to view the binder periodically to recall center time memories.
