Pre-schooler Activities for Sunday School

Teaching a preschool Sunday School class can be a daunting task. It requires patience, a good attitude and preparation. Keep lesson plans simple and easy enough for a young child to grasp, yet still well-prepared and thought out so that the activities keep the attention of the class. You can incorporate several, simple yet informative and engaging activities into a preschool Sunday School classroom that will keep the interest of the students while teaching them valuable lessons about their faith.
  1. Stained Class Cross

    • After talking to students about the importance of the cross and telling them stories from the Bible that connect with the significance of the cross, do this wax-paper stained glass cross activity. Before the children begin, cut pieces of wax paper into the shape of crosses, and cut and leave out several squares of brightly colored tissue paper. Have the students arrange the pieces of tissue paper on top of the wax paper, attaching them with glue. Students can glue however they like, and excess tissue paper can be hanging from the edges of the cross. Once the crosses are dry, the teacher can cut off the excess tissue paper around the edges, bringing the cross shape back to life. Punch a hole in the top of the cross and thread some string through it so that children can hang their stained-glass crosses up in their windows and be reminded of their special relationship with God.

    Coloring

    • Coloring is a simple, yet effective activity that you can be easily incorporate into your preschool Sunday school class. The coloring activities should coordinate with the lesson you are teaching students from the day. Incorporating a fun, hands on, activity into the lesson can help students remember the information they learned. Help the stories of the Bible come to life by printing off several coloring worksheets. You can find them at a variety of websites, including First School. If you are discussing Noah's story, print off pictures depicting Noah's Ark and all of the animals aboard. Have the students talk with you about their coloring and see how they interpreted the lessons you taught during class.

    Jesus Loves Me

    • Teaching preschool aged children that Jesus Loves them is very important. After reading them a passage from John 3:16 about God loving the world as much as he did, begin showing students how much Jesus loves them. Have a heart-themed day in class by handing out heart stickers and having heart and love activities to remind students of Jesus's love for them. Cut out paper hearts from construction paper prior to class. Have each student decorate the heart however they wish with glitter, markers and crayons. Help help each kid write his name in the middle of the heart. Make a collage on the wall that says "Jesus loves..." and put all the hearts with the children's name around the saying to remind students of Jesus' love. Teach the kids the popular song "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know," during class and have everyone sing it together. You easily can find recordings of the songs as well as lyrics online.

    Watch Over Me Jesus Pillows

    • Prior to students attending class, draw an outline on enough pillow cases for each child. Outline a smiling sun on one side, with the phrase "Rise and shine, Jesus loves you this day!" On the other side outline a smiling moon and write "Watch over me as I sleep, Jesus." Once kids arrive in class have them color in and decorate the pillow cases using fabric markers. Once they finish, tell them that each night before they go to bed they will flip their pillow to the moon side and repeat the words on the pillow before they go to sleep. When they wake up, they flip the pillow over to the sun side and say the phrase on that side of the pillow. The pillow can serve as a constant reminder of God's presence in a child's life.
