Fun Finger Games

Think back to your childhood, and you can probably recall songs, rhymes, claps and finger plays you haven't thought about in years. Finger plays are a fun way to help children develop valuable memory, recall and language skills. Although most are appropriate for preschool-aged children, rhymes can also be adapted to suit older children.
  1. Five Fat Peas

    • Five fat peas in a pea pod pressed (children hold hand in a fist). One grew, two grew, so did all the rest (put thumb and fingers up one by one). They grew and grew (raise hand in the air very slowly) and did not stop, until one day the pod went POP (children clap hands together)!

    Ten Fingers

    • I have ten fingers (hold up both hands, fingers spread wide), and they all belong to me (point to self). I can make them do things, would you like to see? I can shut them up tight (make fists). I can open them wide (open hands). I can put them together (place palms together). I can make them all hide (put hands behind back). I can make them jump high (hands over head). I can make them jump low (touch floor). I can fold them up quietly (fold hands in lap) and hold hold them just so.

    Miss Polly Had a Dolly

    • Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick (rock arms back and forth like rocking a baby). So she called for the doctor to come quick, quick, quick (make a phone with your thumb and pinky finger and "come here" motion with the other hand). The doctor came with his bag and his hat (tip an imaginary hat), and he knocked on the door with a rat-a-tat-tat (knock with a fist). He looked at the dolly, and he shook his head (shake head), and he said, "Miss Polly, put her straight to bed" (shake head and point finger as if to scold Miss Polly)! He wrote on a paper for some pills, pills, pills (pretend to write on your hand). "I'll be back in the morning with my bill, bill, bill" (hold the imaginary paper out).

    Five Little Seashells

    • Five little seashells (hold up five fingers) lying on the shore. Swish (open the other hand passing it over the five open fingers) went the waves, and then there were four (hold up four fingers on the original hand). Four little seashells pretty as can be. Swish went the waves, and then there were three (continue the same motions, subtracting one finger each time). Three little seashells all pearly new. Swish went the waves, and then there were two. Two little seashells lying in the sun. Swish went the waves, and then there was one. One little seashell lying all alone. I picked it up (hold one finger up in the air) and took it home (put hand in pocket).
