Memorization of Shapes & Colors

As your child grows and develops, she will be absorbing an enormous amount of information about the world around her each day. Because of this, reinforcing important concepts, such as shapes and colors, can be vital to her development. While most children will eventually master these concepts, you can help your child memorize the shapes and colors by reinforcing her learning with several methods.
  1. Natural Introductions

    • Your child will embrace learning about shapes and colors more if she learns them in context and from experience, rather than being lectured about them. Work with your child's natural curiosity as she begins to explore the world. Whenever she expresses interest in an object, reinforce her interest by telling her the color and naming the shape. Finding other objects nearby of similar colors or similar shapes can work to reinforce this lesson, providing your child with the early opportunity to play the game "I Spy."

    Reinforcement

    • Asking your child questions about shapes and colors can help her work on developing her recall of these words and thus reinforce her memorization of them. For example, if you just introduced the color blue to her, you might wait a few hours and show her a blue object, asking her what color it is. Similarly, if she learns about circles, you might go around the room with her, finding examples of other circles to reinforce this lesson.

    Rewards

    • Rewarding your child when she correctly identifies shapes and colors, even if it is just with praise, will make her feel proud of herself and want to continue learning. Stickers and other small rewards also work well to help inspire a child's progress.

    Next Steps

    • After learning basic shapes and colors, you can introduce your child to more complicated concepts, such as the idea of primary colors, as well as more nuanced shades of colors with which she is already familiar. Large boxes of crayons can work well to demonstrate this idea; mixing them together and having your child pick out all of the different kinds of blue colors, for example, can help her better grasp the concepts of different shades.
