Pick three to four colors of construction paper and cut out different shapes in each color. Set up a learning station with a large piece of paper set up in a matrix. Across the top of the matrix, put a splotch of each color that you used to make the shapes. Along the side of the matrix, draw one of each shape that you cut out. Have kindergartners take the cut-out shapes and sort them according to color and shape, placing them in the matrix spot where they match both color and shape.
During circle time, play a game of "I Spy." Begin by picking something in the room and then saying, "I spy something that is...," then name the shape and the color. Go around the circle and have kindergartners guess what it is that you spy. The person who guesses correctly then gets to do the next "I Spy" statement. Tell that child that she must say the shape and the color. If necessary, give hints by saying that it is "near" something and name the shape and color of the thing that it is near.
Create index cards with colored shapes on them. Pass out one card to each kindergarten child and send children searching the classroom for something that is both that shape and size. Have them stand by that object until everyone has found something. Then let each child share what he has found. Shuffle the cards and repeat the game as often as you like. As an alternative, pass out blank index cards to students and have them make a card with a shape and a color for an object they find in the room.
Gather all your students into a circle and have them sit on the floor. Then give the instruction, "Every child wearing a red shirt should stand up and make a triangle with the other students wearing a red shirt." They should find a way to stand so that they are in the shape of a triangle. Repeat this with different colors, pieces of clothing or hair, and shapes. Encourage students to work cooperatively and praise them when they help each other.
