Math Activities for Preschoolers on Counting

Counting is a basic skill most children master during preschool. Since young children learn best through play, find opportunities to teach counting skills as your students engage in play throughout the day. Ask students building with blocks to count the number of blocks they use as they build. During outside play, ask students to count the number of bars on the monkey bars. And encourage students to count the number of cookies or apple slices on their plate during snack time.
  1. Basketball Game

    • Teach your students how to count with a fun basketball game. Set up a child-sized basketball hoop inside or outside your classroom. Ask students to line up in front of the hoop. Tell students that each time a student makes a basket the class earns one point. Ask students to call out the score as each basket is made.

    Counting Necklace

    • Use a simple craft to help your students learn to count. Give each student a piece of brightly colored yarn and some large beads. Tie a knot at one end of the string. Ask students to string the beads on the yarn, counting as they go. Ask students to predict how many beads will fit on their piece of string and give a prize to the students who guess correctly. Let students wear the beads as necklaces.

    Counting and Sorting

    • Use an egg carton to create a fun counting game, recommends Preschool Rock. Give students empty egg cartons or small containers and small items to count: dry beans, beads and marbles are all good choices. Write numbers on small slips of paper and place them into the empty spaces in the egg carton. Ask students to place the correct number of items into the corresponding space. To make the activity more difficult, encourage students to sort and group the items you give them; for example, two blue marbles in one space, and four brown beans in the next.

    Physical Activities

    • Get your students moving with a fun counting activity. Ask students to stand up and find their own space. Next, ask students to perform basic movements, such as jumping or bending a certain number of times. For example, ask students to hop on one foot five times or touch their toes twice. As the class performs the movements, ask them to count along. Let students take turns choosing the activity and number and leading the class.
