How to Teach Preschool About Seasons

Preschool children are aware of the changing seasons and are curious about what causes the changes and what makes each season different. Build on this curiosity to encourage learning about what distinguishes the seasons. Activities, crafts, songs and lessons can give the students a firm grasp of the names and qualities of the seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a large chart with a quadrant for each season. Place on it illustrations of things that happen in each season. For example, use magazine photos or pictures drawn by the students. Write the name of a season in large letters at the top of each section of the chart. To help the children identify the seasons, place a symbol of the season by each name, such as a flower for spring.

    • 2

Talk about the holidays that occur in each season. Ask students what the weather is usually like at Christmas, Halloween, Easter and the Fourth of July. Describe the season in which these holidays occur and ask students to connect the weather with the correct season, using the holidays as clues.

    • 3

Discuss the clothing typically worn during each season. Select as a class an item of clothing symbolic of the season, such as a scarf for winter and a swimsuit for summer. Have the students choose a season and draw pictures of themselves in that clothing. Put one of the pictures in each of the quadrants on the chart.

    • 4

Talk about the seasonal changes in nature. Play a matching game, making four laminated construction paper trees, one for each season. Make laminated green leaves for summer, flowers for spring, orange and red leaves for fall, and a snowflake for winter. Have students match the objects to the correct tree.

    • 5

Emphasize the current season by drawing pictures, playing games and singing songs appropriate to the season, such as "Singin' in the Rain" for spring.
