Toddler Lesson Plans for September

Toddlers have short attention spans, which makes it important to create fun and engaging lessons with multiple activities. There are many ideas that can be used to create lessons plans for the month of September. Holidays in September, such as Labor Day and Grandparent's Day, can be used as the central theme of the lessons. Activities such as story time, crafts and discussions can keep the lesson engaging for these little students.
  1. Labor Day

    • Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday in September to honor working men and women. Toddlers can learn about different careers on this day. Give them coloring pages with images of nurses, firemen, cooks and other professionals. Explain to the children what each job consists of and why it is important to the community. Read children books that explain different professions. Ask the students what they would like to be when they grow up and have them role play, dressing up and using props.

    Children's Safety Week

    • Children's safety week is the first week of September, and it is a good time to remind toddlers about safety. If the toddlers are close to preschool age, they can learn how to call 911 and when it should be called. For younger toddlers, remind them specific safety rules, such as not talking to strangers, using shoes outside, not touching hot things and being careful with animals. You can also explain what policemen and firemen do. Give them coloring pages about safety and talk about this topic while the children color.

    Grandparent's Day

    • Grandparent's Day is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day. Toddlers can learn and prepare for this holiday the Friday after Labor Day if they are in a school setting. Explain to the kids what grandparents are, and how they love them and care for them. Have them color cards to give to their grandparents. If possible, visit an old people home and let the toddlers play with the residents there. Read books about grandparents and let the toddlers share about their own if they can.

    Fall

    • Fall begins in September. Explain to the children what fall is in simple terms; explain how the temperature gets colder and the tree's leaves fall. Show them pictures of autumn if it is still warm outside or have them look outside through the windows. Go outside and collect tree leaves and other fall items. Have the children paste them on construction paper and make designs. Color squashes and pumpkins with paint, making faces and patterns. Read children books about fall.
