Lesson Plans & Activities for Safety

It is important to educate children about the dangers they may face in their day-to-day lives. Lessons combined with activities will help students retain the information they need to know. A creative lesson that helps students remember what they need to know can help save lives or prevent injury in the case of an emergency. Choose activities with a physical component to help children remember what they need to do.
  1. Poison Awareness

    • Young children often lack the ability to distinguish between foods that are good for them and substances that may be poisonous or toxic to them. By the time that children are 3 years old, it is less effective to hide toxic substances from them; instead, it is important to help them recognize what the dangers might be. Show students a medicine bottle, a bottle of cleanser and a bottle of fertilizer or pesticide. Tell them that these items never contain food, and if they are ever confused, they should ask an adult.

    Earthquake Preparedness

    • If you live in an area with earthquakes, teach students what to do if one occurs. FEMA recommends having them stand up and shake in place for one minute. Earthquakes often last less than one minute, yet students should know that a minute can feel like a very long time. Show students how to crawl under a desk, sitting with their legs pulled up and their hands over the back of their necks. Have them turn away from windows that might break and tell them that if the desk moves, they should grab the legs and stay underneath it.

    Phone Numbers

    • One important part of staying safe is knowing the right numbers to call. All young children should know their home phone numbers and how to dial 911. Have each child write out his own number at least 10 times so that he can reproduce it easily. Throughout the day, ask a child from the class to write down his phone number so that you can see if it is correct. Give each child who gets his number correct a small prize.

    Police Officer Recognition

    • When a child is lost or alone, she should find a police officer who can help her. Show students a picture of a police officer and ask them what about the policeman's uniform stands out to them. Point out the color of the uniform, the hat and the badge. Tell them to find someone wearing this outfit if they need help or information.
