Ideas for Fiesta Hats for Pre-K

Celebrate with your pre-k class by hosting a fiesta where kids can learn about party traditions from Mexico. During the party kids can learn about why fiestas are held, play the games and make crafts from the country. One party item you cannot leave out is the fiesta hat. Have your students make the hats before the party so they can wear them during the celebration.
  1. Flag Hat

    • Make a hat out of a paper plate that resembles the Mexican flag. Materials needed include white paper plates, scissors, red and green paint and small cocktail Mexican flags. Cut out the center of the plate and a portion of the rim so the hat fits on the child’s head like a headband. Draw a two vertical lines dividing the hat into three equal sections. Paint the section of the left green, the one of the right red and leave the middle white. If desired, tape small Mexican flags used for party cocktails across the top of the hat.

    Cone Hat

    • Turn a traditional cone party hat into a Mexican fiesta masterpiece your students can wear during the party. Materials needed include colored cardboard, tape, glue, ribbons in red, green and white, stickers of peppers and confetti in shapes of peppers and cacti. Roll the cardboard into a cone that is large enough to fit on the child’s head and secure in place with tape. Cut two pieces of ribbon long enough to tie under the child’s chin and tape them to the hat. Glue on confetti and add stickers. If desired, attach long strands of ribbon from the point of the cone.

    Cereal Box Hat

    • Encourage parents to help out by bringing in empty cereal boxes that can be turned into fiesta hats. Materials needed include paint, colored paper, tape, glue, ribbon and cactus stickers. Spray paint boxes red to give your student’s a blank canvas for the hat designs. Using the construction paper have your students cut out two cacti large enough to cover most of the box. Finish decorating the box using stickers and markers. If desired, attach two pieces of ribbon long enough to tie under the child’s chin.

    Balloon Band Hat

    • Make a hat that will have the kids floating with joy, just like the balloons that will be attached to their heads. Materials needed include red or green construction paper; Mexican flag sticker; red, green and white helium-filled balloons with strings attached; glitter; tape and glue. Using the construction paper, make a strip that is large enough to wrap around the child’s head. The strip should be approximately 1 to 1 ½ inches wide. Let the child decorate using the glitter and stickers. Tape the strings of the balloons, one of each color, to the band.
