Paper Snakes for Preschoolers to Make

Preschoolers are fascinated by long, slithery snakes. Fill your classroom with books that feature snakes. Ask a local zoo keeper or pet shop owner to bring snakes into the classroom for students to see and touch, or plan a field trip to visit snakes at your local zoo. Indulge your students' curiosity with simple paper snake crafts.
  1. Bendy Snakes

    • Make colorful, bendy snakes with construction paper. Cut long strips of construction paper in a variety of colors. Let students choose two strips of paper and place them on their desk to create an "L" shape and glue together, recommends the website DTLK. Fold the vertical strip of paper down over the horizontal strip, and then fold the horizontal strip over the vertical strip. Repeat this process until all of the paper is folded like an accordion. Use a small drop of glue to hold the ends in place. Give students small wiggly eyes to attach to one end of the paper snake. Show students how to cut a tongue shape from red paper and attach it to the snake face as well.

    Tube Snake

    • Create a colorful snake with paper tubes. Cut strips of construction paper in a variety of colors, then cut the strips in half. Show students how to roll the strips of paper to create short tubes and secure them with a small drop of glue. Punch a hole on the side of each tube using a hole punch. Encourage students to create ten or more tubes. Give each student a long piece of yarn with a knot on one end, and show students how to thead the yarn through the holes in each tube, pulling the tubes together so there is no space between them. When the tubes are all attached, tie a knot on the end of the string and show students how to pull the string to make the snake slither.

    Spiral Snake

    • You could also make a spiral paper snake. Cut a large circle out of white card stock. Use a black marker to draw a spiral beginning on the outside of the circle and moving inward. At the end of the spiral, draw a snake head. Give each student a circle and paint in a variety of colors. Encourage students to paint the snake lightly, so that the marker can still be seen. When the paint is dry, show students how to cut along the spiral. When the spiral is cut, punch a small hole into the snake's head and attach a long string. Hang the spiral snakes from the ceiling.

    Class Snake

    • Make a large snake to cover an entire wall of your classroom. Cut a large snake shape from white bulletin board paper. Include a head at one end of the snake, and add eyes and a tongue. Lay the paper snake on the floor and let students come a few at a time to work on decorating it. Provide markers or paint and encourage students to decorate their portion of the snake in any way they choose. When all students have had a turn decorating the snake, hang it in the classroom.
