Show students how to make a cat with their hand print. Help students dip their hands in black paint. Press ther hands on a piece of white paper to leave a print. Turn the paper upside down so the fingers point downward. Show students how their fingers look like the cat's legs and their thumb resembles a tail. Cut a cat head shape from black construction paper. Have students glue the head onto their cat. Have students glue two wiggly eyes onto the cat's head. Give students markers and encourage them to draw scenery around the cat.
Help students use simple shapes to create a cat face. Cut large circles from white card stock. and small triangles from pink paper. Give each student one large circle, three triangles, two wiggly eyes and two black pipe cleaners, cut in half. Encourage students to paint the circle black, white, yellow, brown or any combination. Once the paint dries, have students glue two of the triangles to the tops of the circle for ears. Students then attach the wiggly eyes. Glue the remaining pink triangle on the middle of the circle with the point facing downward for the nose. To complete the drawing, have students draw the cat's mouth. Use the pipe cleaners as the cat's face to make whiskers.
Teach students about the color and varieties of cats with a cat collage. Give students nature and cat magazines and safety scissors. Have them cut out pictures of cats, domestic and wild. Have students use a glue stick to attach their cut-out pictures onto a piece of paper. As they work, talk with your students about the different colors and patterns on the cats.
Use a paper bag to make a cat puppet. Have students place an unopened brown paper bag upside down on their desks, with the fold (the bottom of the bag) at the top. Cut triangles from white card stock and give two to each student. Let students paint the bag and triangles in black, yellow and white paint. Have students glue the triangles to the bag for ears. Attach two wiggly eyes, too. Let students draw the cat's mouth using markers. Cut black, yellow, white and brown pipe cleaners in half and give six pipe cleaners of the same color to each student. Show students how to glue the pipe cleaners onto their puppet to make whiskers. When the glue is dry, help students slip their hand into the bag and work the puppet.
